A cervical discectomy and disc replacement is sometimes carried out to treat a disc prolapse in the neck which is causing spinal cord or nerve root compression.
The disc is removed through an incision at the front of the neck and replaced with a mobile disc, which can be made from variety of materials, such as ceramic, PEEK or metal. No plate is required. The medium-term benefit of a cervical disc replacement is mainly seen in young adults, as it preserves some neck movement.
